Why does my cat like the smell of olives? What funny or weird thing does your pet do associated w/ food?

My cats will do anything to get to olives! It's so weird. And they don't eat pieces of chicken. My dogs are vaccuums. One used to try to bury her treats in the house, running around and whining to find a good place! Then she'd resort to "digging" a hole in the carpet behind the chair (not a tuft moved!), push the bone under it and I swear she pushed the IMAGINARY dirt OVER where her bone was!

My cats think flowers delivered are for THEM. Oh, and our betta fish believes he's a shark and leaps up slightly out of the water to attack his food. (No he isn't starved!) Animals are fun and often full of adorable mischief. I look forward to hearing the peccadillos of other people's pets!

Reply:Hi,

Thanks to all of you! These were great. I couldn't select a best - although the more detail and anecdotes in the answer the more I laughed!

Hug your pets and don't forget them at holidays. Thanks so much! Report It

Reply:Our old cat (she's about 20), Orion, LOVES Spicier Nacho Doritios!
Reply:My cat is sooo hilarious! instead of drinking her water, she dips her paw into the bowl and then licks all the water off of it! It's so funny! My guinea pig is also pretty funny, too, whenever I fill her food bowl up she ALWAYS knocks it over and pours it all out and then eats it. We also have a parakeet who talks to her water bottle. She'll start to chirp and everything right next to the bottle, then she rubs her head against it and does it over and over again. So cute! It's so much fun to watch them!
Reply:Pets definitely have weird food likes and dislikes, just as people do. I had a dog that loved pizza, and would sit in front of the oven when one was cooking to make sure that she would get some. We actually would make her a special small homemade one with only a tiny bit of sauce and sausage and hamburger for her birthday.

The cat we had at the same time also loved olives, and the vet told us that a lot of cats are drawn to olives because they like salty foods. We had to check with the vet to make sure it wouldn't make her sick. She would lick the olive, bite off and eat small pieces, and then roll on the floor and get the scent all over herself, it affected her in a similar manner to catnip.

My current animal family has their own quirks. My dog, a Pom, begs for radishes and iceberg lettuce. One cat begs for milk (which is really not good for grownup cats), another loves spring mix type salad, another begs for anchovies or canned tuna juice, and the forth begs for pieces of bread or crackers.

They are all well fed and taken care of, so they are not just begging because they are hungry and underfed; they are asking for certain items. They are comical and very entertaining when they do this.

With the holidays fast approaching, they will be lined up in front of the oven, watching the turkey like a pack of vultures while it is being turned and basted, and we better remember to "share," or we will be getting the "I'm so offended stares" for weeks to come.

One of my friends has a cat who loves whipped cream and will do all kinds of acrobatics to get some. Now this is a big black male cat who is the king of the house until he sees whipped cream, and he will turn himself into a lap cat to get what he wants.

Just add a few humans into this mix with our likes and dislikes and it really is comedy central. Have a wonderful and entertaining holiday season with your family, friends and furry family members. Laughter is good for the soul.
Reply:our cat will not eat tuna, chicken but LOVES cool ranch doritos as long as we break them up into small pieces, has to have ice in his water bowl or he won't drink anything for days, dislikes catnip, but will eat the leaves off my rose plants...and will not touch the "cat grass" we got so he doesn't attack the roses

our dog will eat ANYTHING he can get into his mouth, we have to turn the kleenex box upside down so he doesn't clean out the box, loves to eat raw vegetables, and "buries" his bones in the corners of the room, under pillows, or in the space between the cushion of the couch, and covers with the "dirt" he thinks is there...we've given him an old towel that he uses in dirt's place
Reply:My cat likes to stick his paw down into my empty glass of milk and get the few drops that r left at the bottom and lick it off his paw. He also tries to go outside every time we open the door but he is too scared to stay out long. Oh, and he plays fetch with these little mice things. He is also a major klutz, he steps on paper if it is hanging off of a table or something and falls on the floor. My other cat at least tests it first.
